About your lifelong relationship with the University at Buffalo...

Eligibility

Latin Honors: The University at Buffalo pays special tribute to some of its most accomplished undergraduates with the conferral of the Gold Cord and Latin honors at the University Honors Convocation. The Gold Cord is given in recognition of the outstanding achievements of students who are graduating magna cum laude (a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.75) or summa cum laude (3.75 or better). Students need to demonstrate a cumulative overall and UB grade point average of 3.5 or better (Transfer work is included in determining the final overall grade point average). In addition to GPA requirements, students must present a minimum of 90 credit hours of graded undergraduate coursework with a minimum of 30 credit hours completed at UB.

University at Buffalo graduates who are scheduled to receive Latin Honors will receive an invitation to participate in the Honors Convocation. These invitations will be mailed in early April. President John Simpson will host the ceremony, taking place on Friday, May 9, to recognize outstanding academic achievement by members of this year's graduating class.

Latin honors are based on your UB average or your overall grade point average, whichever is the lower of the two. Please note that final Latin honors are determined once grades for the spring semester are in and a final grade point average is computed. If you are graduating in May, your final honor may be different than what is announced at Convocation. However, if your graduation was September 2007 or February 2008, your Latin honor has already been determined.

We hope that invited students will be present to receive their certificate signed by the President and a gold cord to be worn at Commencement. Your name and the achievement(s) for which you are being honored (i.e., Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, University Honors Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, and/or one professional school honors society - Beta Gamma Sigma, Sigma Theta Tau, or Tau Beta Pi only) will be read, President Simpson will congratulate students, and Provost Tripathi will present the certificate. Dr. Michael Ryan, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, will present students with the gold cord.
